Designing Your Home: Key Concepts to Keep In Mind for a Harmonious Space

Designing a space in your home is more than just arranging furniture—it's about creating an environment that reflects your personality, supports your lifestyle, and promotes well-being.

Let’s be honest, in the world of AI it’s a lot easier to get ideas and inspiration in the palm of your hand; but it’s SO important to consider a few key concepts specific to your life – because AI can make certainly make it pretty, but it doesn’t LIVE in the spaces it creates. You do!

So whether you're revamping a single room or undertaking a full home makeover, understanding core design principles can guide you toward a space that feels both functional and inspiring.

Core Principles of Interior Design

1. Functionality First

Begin by considering how the space will be used. Is it going to see heavy foot traffic? Is it going to be used for entertainment or private use? Who is going to be using this space: children, adults, pets, all of the above? The answers to these questions will provide insight to color choices, furniture pieces, material options, etc. Every item should serve a purpose, and the layout should facilitate easy movement and accessibility.

For instance, in a living room, arrange seating to encourage conversation but it should also ensure pathways are clear. Consider spill-proof & performance material’s for spaces that have children and/or pets for better wear and easy clean up.

2. Proportion & Scale

Ensure that furniture and decor are appropriately sized for the room. Oversized furniture can overwhelm a small space, while tiny pieces may get lost in a large room. Aim for a balance that feels comfortable and cohesive.

For smaller footprints consider wall sconces for lighting to eliminate unnecessary stands or floor lamps. Do not be afraid to use paint to change the feel of a rooms size.

Areas rugs, if you chose to have one, can also influence the feel and optics of a space.

Hanging curtains higher than the window can add the illusion of height in some spaces. Some spaces may accommodate shades instead of curtains as well, or maybe you love a completely unobstructed window.

Remember that this is YOUR space, and just because some items are commonly expected to be in a space doesn’t mean they NEED to be.

3. Emphasis (Focal Point)

Create a central feature in the room, such as a fireplace, a piece of artwork, or a statement piece of furniture. This draws the eye and provides a sense of order and purpose to the space.

A focal point will serve as a compass for arranging your décor outward into the space. Competing focal points can provoke feelings of over-stimulation.

4. Contrast

This is the most important to me personally when deciding on décor. Introduce variety through contrasting colors, textures, and shapes. This adds visual interest and prevents the space from feeling flat or monotonous. For example, pair soft fabrics with hard surfaces or light colors with dark accents.

The way you choose to contrast can significantly impact the scale of a space, or serve as the focal point if you don’t have an obvious feature. It can also influence rhythm and harmony, which we haven’t yet discussed but we will certainly get to. Contrast is one of the first things you notice about a space as well. Monochromatic spaces often blend with less details, while a creative contrast can create warmth, structure, and ambience.

5. Rhythm

Establish a sense of movement by repeating elements like colors, patterns, or shapes at regular intervals. This guides the eye throughout the space and creates a harmonious flow.

Some people prefer to having matching furniture pieces, others may prefer to just match colors with differing styles. While others still may prefer architectural rhythms, such as the softness of arched doorways and rounded furniture pieces.

6. Harmony & Unity

All elements in the room should work together cohesively. This doesn't mean everything must match, but there should be a unifying theme or color palette that ties the space together.

My personal style is heavily influenced by nature and the mood that different elements can create. Our walls, floor, and major structural pieces reflect a neutral palette what allows for bold pops of color in our accent pieces without being overwhelming.

When it comes to designing your own space have fun & remember not to get caught up in all the shininess of AI designs. It is a wonderful tool for inspiration, but it lacks identity.

Designing is a personal activity that not only acts a form of meditation, but presents a reflection of who you are in your home. Never lose that!

Until next time Friends, Stay Gold.
